The latest that is coming up in the AMD factory would be the low-end Brazos chips. When asked about the chip’s area of implementation, the company mentioned it was intended for low-power laptops and desktops, while tablets was another possibility which OEMs would definitely use the chip with. Although tablets are the rage currently AMD says it would still concentrate on competing in the average and high-end PC/laptop segment of the market, with arch-rival Intel on the other end.

Talking of competition in the tablets arena, AMD has an opponent in the form of NVIDIA whose Tegra 2 chips are selling hot right now. With its good graphic capabilities along with great computing performance, the NVIDIA Tegra 2 chip has only one disadvantage- it being an ARM-based chip cannot run full-featured versions of Windows. On the other hand, the Tegra 2 platform enjoys advantage in the form of better performance with the Android OS, plus full HD (1080p) video playback, while x86-based chips like the AMD Brazos are just good enough for the Google OS.

Currently, there aren’t any chips in the AMD battlefield which are specifically aimed at tablets, or in a way compete with the Intel Atom chip or chips by other manufacturers like Samsung, Qualcomm, Texas Instruments and Freescale. But with AMD’s expertise in graphics, owing to the acquisition of ATI, the company can actually deliver chips like the Tegra 2 that are high on both graphics as well as computing performance.
