Nvidia reveals Tegra 2 3D processor for tablet displays

The Nvidia Tegra 2 line of mobile processors has just begun to find its way into tablets and smartphones such as the upcoming Motorola Xoom and Atrix, but the graphics giant is now gearing up to add another member to its Tegra family. Expected to be revealed at this year’s Mobile World Congress, the Tegra 2 3D will be running at a speed of up to 1.2 GHz in order to
power the 3D displays of possible future portable releases. In addition, these 3D displays are anticipated to be glasses-free due to the close and narrow line-of-sight towards the individual viewer, unlike movie theaters which must accommodate multiple viewers throughout a wide viewing angle. These advantages will allow the manufacturers better control of the 3D effect while the Tegra 2 3D chipset processes the graphics load from potential 3D movies and games.
The Tegra 2 3D is expected to arrive this year, but consumers may have to wait longer as manufacturers have yet to announce tablets based on the new Nvidia processor. The Tegra line of mobile processors mainly competes with the Intel Atom in the portable media market.
